Upping the Ante for Gaza:
Stop the Genocide Now!
In 1857 U.S. Abolitionist Frederick Douglass described the limits of Fascist Power:
“Find out just what any people will quietly submit to and you have found out the exact measure of injustice and wrong which will be imposed upon them, and these will continue till they are resisted with either words or blows, or with both. The limits of tyrants are prescribed by the endurance of those whom they oppress.”
People are rising up against Israel’s genocide in Gaza.
When Netanyahu spoke last week at the United Nations, 145 countries walked out.
Ships from Spain, Italy and Greece are escorting a Palestine Peace flotilla that intends to land in Gaza to deliver food and medicine. Each of these countries have past experience with fascism:
- Italy was ruled by Mussolini from 1922 until 1945. Today it has a fascist leader.
- Spain was under fascism from 1936 until 1974.
- Greece lived through a fascist dictatorship from 1967 to 1974.
The people of these countries dealt with mass slaughter and remember. They are forcing their countries to act.
Last week, Italy’s grassroots unions, representing hundreds of thousands of people ranging from schoolteachers to metalworkers, called for a 24-hour general strike in both public and private sectors, including public transportation, trains, schools and ports.
This global challenge to genocide will escalate if Israel attacks the flotilla again. A global general strike against Gaza is potentially in the offing.
With its open support of genocide, the U.S. can no longer convince people that it is a democracy. Now Donald Trump threatens to shut down the government and lay off hundreds of thousands more federal workers on Wednesday. Fascism is bringing Gaza home to roost.
In the U.S., artificial intelligence is rapidly replacing jobs or converting them into gig work that cannot sustain life. Today over half of U.S. households do not receive a steady income and must rely on precarious work…when it happens to be offered. Four in ten report that they do not have enough money to cover a $400 emergency room visit. Eighty percent of U.S. families live paycheck to paycheck.
Fascism is attempting to crush a rising social movement that understands that it cannot submit and conciliate with the open seizure of political power that we are seeing today.
Fascism is drawing a line in the sand. The choice is becoming ever clearer: it’s either capitalism and fascism and ecological disaster, or it’s a cooperative socialist system driven by real genuine grass-roots democracy.
“The fight against fascism is a fight for basic human needs for all, for democracy, for the control of government, and for the future of humanity and the planet. By taking the offensive to defeat fascism, the working class – those with jobs, gig workers and the dispossessed – can pass over to the offensive against capitalism and private property, the seedbed of fascism.”
