RNT at the Oscars
Sinners Exposes Fascism and Hollywood.
Today, millions of Americans are standing up against fascism and ICE.
Hollywood had its chance at the Oscars and failed. In the past year, Trump has used personal decrees to undo legislation that guarantees the support of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion. You can add Tinsel Town to the list of institutions that choose to kowtow to fascism.
Fascism is Not New to America1
The Jim Crow South of “Sinners” was the world’s first fascist state.
The Nazi’s studied the legal structure of segregation, along with the violent confinement of Native Americans in the same period, to “legally” exterminate Jewish people, Gypsies, LGBTQ+ folks, unionists, and revolutionaries. Fascism and segregation born in the Jim Crow South and refined in Nazi Germany, Apartheid South Africa is alive and well in the United States and Israel. No matter what the media and “entertainment experts” say, the Oscar awards did not reflect this history, but, rather, gave in to the MAGA fascist demands to only highlight the positive side of our history.
The Academy also bowed to the pro-Zionist forces and ignored “The Voice of Hind Rajab”, a Tunisian film that features the voice of a 5-year-old Palestinian girl whose phone call begging for help was heard across the world before she was killed by Israeli forces in Gaza. Instead, “Sentimental Value”, a Norwegian film about a dysfunctional family, was named the best international feature.
“Sinners” brings much-deserved attention to Black storytelling and original films, which are a catalyst for progress in this country. Hollywood honored this with 4 Oscars, but it was nominated for 16, the most ever by a movie in almost 100 years. It dared not go further.
“Sinners” dares to show what life was like for African-Americans in the first era of American Fascism. The American people, who are rising up against the current era of American Fascism, responded to this film with enthusiasm, making it a commercial success.
With the invasion of our cities by ICE fascism, millions of people are standing up against it.
However, Hollywood has joined the rest of the corporate world – Harvard, Columbia, the media, the digital platforms, military contractors, private corporations that get rich off of private prisons – and many, many politicians in pretending that the fascist threat is not real. Behind the individual fascists today, we are seeing the systematic implementation of the class violence of corporate dictatorship. Hollywood is on board with that.
“Sinners” equates racism with vampires.
It uses one of the fictional characteristics of vampires – that they cannot get in unless you invite them – to show what happens when people do not oppose fascism. The endgame of fascism is always mass slaughter, as we saw with the Nazi “Final Solution” and as we see today in Gaza. This is the real horror, and the movie proves the point.
Most people understand that a country that denies its history is doomed to repeat it. Opposing attacks on DEI, opposing genocide, holding every single public figure to account, and fighting Trump’s illegal systematic criminalization of immigrants and all marginalized people is the road to the defeat of fascism and the class that profits from it.
“The fight against fascism is a fight for basic human needs for all, for democracy, for the control of government, and for the future of humanity and the planet. By taking the offensive to defeat fascism, the working class can pass over to the offensive against capitalism and private property, the seedbed of fascism.” 2
