Tariffs and Inflation

Inflation hurts working class families, but it is great for the 1%, millionaires and billionaires, and all capitalists! We’re talking about the ruling class. They rule in their own interests. Here’s how it works….

Tariffs mean higher prices and contribute to inflation. A tariff is a tax on imports. A 25% tariff means that a $100 shirt from Mexico now costs $125. The extra $25 goes to the US government. Who do you think is going to pay the extra $25?

Why raise prices? The government is trying to eliminate all taxes on corporations and billionaires. But they need money to run, so the taxes that the rich are not going to pay has to come out of our pockets. The Trump tariffs are the largest tax increase on families in US history!

Higher prices fuel inflation. So why take the risk? The answer lies in the difference between personal and private property.

Most of us have personal property, the things that belong to us and that we use every day – our homes, cars, phones, computers, TVs, clothes, … It is also the cars that ride-sharing drivers use, a trucker’s tractor unit, a carpenter’s tools, everything we need and use to make a living.

Inflation is bad for working class families because it relentlessly increases the price we pay for our personal property and drives up the costs for food, housing, medical care, gas, and everything we need to survive. We are getting screwed!

Capitalist wealth is in private property. Capitalists claim to own corporations and finance. Big Oil tells us that they have the right to own fossil fuels and therefore have the right to destroy the climate. Big Pharma tells us that they have the right to own the formulas for the medicines we all need. Big Tech tells us that it is perfectly OK that they sell our information to other surveillance corporations. This is their formula for making private profit off of the destruction of US society, humanity and the global ecological crisis.

Inflation is good for capitalists. Inflation increases the price for a stock, a bond, a financial investment, pieces of paper that make nothing. You cannot eat them, wear them, drive them or shelter you family with them. The capitalists make money doing nothing.

Inflation is a policy, not an Act of God; it is a money-making scheme. Under Biden, inflation took money out of our pockets and gave it to the wealthy 1%. Trump’s “tariffs” are just another way to keep the wealth flowing to the rich. This is one price we pay for allowing billionaires to exist!

Enough is enough, “Hands Off!” On Saturday, April 5,¹ hundreds of thousands of people marched in 1,400 demonstrations in the US and across the world to protest the huge MAGA imposed changes to our government and economy. This was an important step towards a new world.

We cannot go back! The challenge for all revolutionaries is to grasp that we cannot go back to the old system that existed 6 months ago, even if we wanted to. There is no way to “fix” this predatory capitalism that is bent on extracting wealth from the rest of us.

We must go forward! Nothing can be changed until we break the back of the capitalists claim to political power. This is the claim that private individuals have the right to own the wealth of humanity and Nature. We must end private property.

The struggle over ideas is the first major struggle in a revolution.

This is a debate for all of us!
