As of Thursday, August 21, over 1900 national guard troops, from 7 “Red States”, patrol Washington DC. These states all have cities with higher crime rates than DC. Then yesterday, Trump’s imposed US Attorney declared that carrying a rifle or shotgun in the city is no longer a felony!
Sending troops from one state to another is considered an act of civil war. But not for Washington DC. DC residents do not have statehood, nor equal representation under the law, nor do they control their police or national guard. This is the legacy of slavery and 200 years of Jim Crow. The population of DC today is 43% African-American and well over 50% minority. The US Congress and both political parties have long opposed local control.
No wonder Trump wants to eliminate Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI). This is not about “culture wars”. It is about abolishing every law that guarantees equality across the country.

This is an important moment for people to care about a free D.C., to care about statehood for the people of D.C., and to actually give us, for once, equal representation under the law, because the reason we don’t have it is a legacy of slavery and a legacy of racism. Trump’s fascist power grabs will not stop until we the people stop it. Jesse Rabinowitz of the National Homelessness Law Center spoke outside the White House and defined the challenge we all face:
Locking up people you don’t like or don’t want to see is textbook authoritarianism. Trump is testing opinion by focusing on groups that he believes to have little public sympathy, like folks who live outside. Right now they are coming for homeless folks, trans folks and migrants, but, rest assured, soon they will come for everyone who is not a white, straight, cis, wealthy, Christian man. The only solution is solidarity and collective action. (op sit)
There IS a way out of fascism, but it requires rooting it out at its base:
