COP30: Capitalism Wins – Our Planet Loses

The world is in danger. Every day, industry pumps toxic chemicals and heat-trapping greenhouse gases into the atmosphere. Our lands and forests are being torn apart and ravaged for minerals and oil, or cleared for corporate farming.

We all know that the Earth’s climate has changed and that we are paying for it.

Cop30 is not the answer. This year’s United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change was billed as the “COP of Truth”. But the final declaration of the conference did not even mention fossil fuels. A commitment to transition away from fossil fuels was not part of the formal deal, and there was no commitment to end deforestation

The President of Colombia, Gustavo Petro, posted on X, “I do not accept that in the COP 30 declaration. It is not clearly stated, as science says, that the cause of the climate crisis is the fossil fuels used by capital. If that is not said, everything else is hypocrisy.” He noted that life on the planet is only possible “if we separate from oil, coal, and natural gas as a source of energy … Colombia opposes a COP 30 declaration that does not tell the scientific truth to the world.”1

COP30 shows that reform will not end the destruction of our planet. The only way is to eliminate the source of the problem – private property – and to end capitalism. Private corporations and individuals claim they own petrochemicals and the resources of Nature, so they are “permitted” to make decisions that ruin the world for all of us.

Capitalism threatens life on earth because it earns profit on every ton of fossils burned, on all the petrochemicals polluting our land, air and water, on mining and corporate agriculture.

Capitalism is killing our planet; it’s time to kill capitalism. It’s kill or be killed. We must do this because we have a beautiful world to win, if we come together to fight for the common good.

Our country and the world stand at a crossroads. Humanity has the potential for economic security and abundance. A community of the people, by the people, and for the people, where children can grow in peace, is possible as never before. Or–if we do nothing—we face increasingly unlivable conditions caused by private ownership of the wealth that human labor has created.”2
