North Carolina Rebels Against ICE

ICE invaded North Carolina on Thursday, November 18. Then an ICE convoy was videoed leaving the state only 4 days later. They claim to have arrested 370 “criminals”. ICE, however, stated that “the operation is not over and it is not ending anytime soon.”

Fascists love spectacle. It hides the fact that they are attacking everybody and can justify nothing.

In an attempt to legitimate itself, ICE hijacked and weaponized the beloved children’s story – Charlotte’s Web.

In the story authored by E.B. White, Charlotte, the spider, devotes her life to securing freedom for a pig named Wilbur in a truly compassionate way. Does this sound like ICE to you??

E.B. White’s granddaughter called ICE out, “He certainly didn’t believe in masked men, in unmarked cars, raiding people’s homes and workplaces without IDs or summons.”¹

“The city of Charlotte has long adopted the hornet as its symbol. It stems from revolutionary America and the militia’s fight against Charles Cornwallis who commanded British troops that occupied Charlotte. Stronger-than-expected resistance from the revolutionary rebels resulted in a successful guerrilla campaign. Sixteen days in, Cornwallis quit and was heard to say: “Let’s get out of here; this place is a damned hornet’s nest.’”²

Since ICE first invaded Los Angeles on June 6, there has been a massive anti-ICE groundswell across the country. The political response from LA has taken flight. From LA to DC to Chicago, Memphis, Portland and Oakland, now into North Carolina, people have organized community self-defense networks (driven by social media). In each case, the resistance becomes better organized and more assertive.

This developing political struggle includes many of the forces that protested the George Floyd murder in 2020, as well as many others. Fascism is drawing every section of the US into opposition if only because we are tired of being told to hate our neighbors who we know and rely upon.

People are rallying around protecting their community members, where the issue of true public safety results in opposition to governance by police force. Increasingly, the movement demands governance that defends the public, even as Trumpian fascism turns government into a repressive force, spelled out in Project 2025 as a billionaire-driven corporate dictatorship.

There is now popular recognition that real democracy means winning political democracy that extends to economic democracy and to state authority.
