The children are always ours, every single one of them, all over the globe; and I am beginning to suspect that whoever is incapable of recognizing this may be incapable of morality” James Baldwin

The Children of Gaza wrote their names on their hands so that their bodies could be identified and buried with their families.

The names of 18,500 children killed in the War in Gaza were published by the Washington Post on July 30th, on Day 663 of the Israeli attack on Gaza. This is only a small portion of the estimated 479,000 children murdered in Gaza and the number grows daily.

The central image of the installation is thousands of children’s hands rising from the earth. The name of a dead child written on each hand. The hands stamped on small Palestinian flags.

In the spirit of the “Say Their Names” movement, the installation will include the reading of the names of 18,500 slain Palestinian children. They are not numbers, they are our children

As the tragedy in Gaza continues and expands in the West Bank, it is our hope that the installation will help bring the reality of the tragedy to the viewers and connect them with the Palestinian people.

The goal of the installation is to fulfill the vision of Arthur Ashe, “to disturb the comfortable and comfort the disturbed.”

This installation is a small gesture of sorrow and a hope for peace from the American people to the people of Gaza.

The installation is inspired by Mahatma Gandhi’s statement“the massacre of innocent people is a serious matter. It is not a thing to be easily forgotten. It is our duty to cherish their memory.”
