Why Lebanon is the Key ?
Iran and the U.S. have announced a framework to end the U.S. war on Iran.1,2 While the terms of the agreement are currently vague, there is one key issue: the fate of Lebanon. Iran has maintained that any enduring truce or framework agreement with the U.S. must strictly mandate an end to fighting on all fronts, including Israeli operations against Hezbollah in Lebanon.1 However, Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz insisted the Israeli army (IDF) will remain in its buffer zone in south Lebanon “indefinitely.”2
The battle over control of Lebanon is part of the fight against Israeli Settler Colonialism – a system of oppression that displaces a native population and replaces it with an invasive settler society.3,4,5 Unlike extractive colonialism, where the primary goal is resource extraction and eventual departure, settler colonists intend to stay permanently and assert permanent sovereignty over the land. This requires the removal of the Indigenous peoples of a territory, by any means necessary, including genocide.
Settler Colonialism “destroys to replace.”
Settler Colonialism is not a single event – it is a permanent, foundational framework of a society.5 In Israel, Settler Colonialism is known as “GREATER ISRAEL”; in America, it is “MANIFEST DESTINEY”.
Greater Israel.
From the start, the Zionists envisioned a “Greater Israel” including all of Palestine, Jordan, southern Lebanon, and southeastern Syria.6,7 The founding of Israel in 1948 was immediately followed by the Nakba, the violent expulsion by Israel of over 700,000 Palestinian people, and the formation of the Palestinian territories of Gaza and the West Bank. The 1967 Six-Day War moved the plan forward as Israel took control of the West Bank, Gaza, East Jerusalem, and the Golan Heights.

Bringing Gaza to Lebanon. Using its genocidal playbook from Gaza, Israel has designated the area south of the Zahrani River as prohibited for civilians. This is 14% of Lebanon and includes major cities such as Tyre (the country’s fourth-largest, with 200,000 residents) and Nabatieh (around 50,000 inhabitants, now almost deserted). 6,7 Israel has destroyed 50,424 houses since March and more than 240,000 since 2023. Hospitals, schools, mosques and churches lay in ruins.
The Israeli goal of “Greater Israel” is not a secret. The Israeli government has openly stated this and is clearly moving to make it a reality. And, they couldn’t give a damn that it is illegal under International Law.6,7
The U.S. government has not condemned Israel’s campaign to make “Greater Israel” a reality; it has supported it with money, arms, and political cover.
Iran’s demand to end Israel’s occupation of Lebanon is a concrete step in combating Israeli Settler Colonialism.
We can join this fight by blocking the proposed “United States-Israel Defense Technology Cooperation Initiative” – Section 224 of the National Defense Authorization Act.8 If this passes, it won’t just mean sending more taxpayer dollars to Israel – it would mean co-producing weapons, turning the U.S. military’s data into the Israeli military’s data too. Representatives Ro Khanna and Thomas Massie have promised to fight this bill on the floor.
