OUR Hemisphere!!???
A joke goes, “What’s our oil doing under Venezuela’s land?”
Right after the US invaded Venezuela and kidnapped its president, the White House website posted: “This is OUR Hemisphere!”1
Exactly who do they mean by “US”? They certainly do not mean the people of the United States or the people of the countries of the Americas. Trump is quite clear on this one: “The US will run the country!” The oil that he seized will be turned over to US petroleum corporations for private profit. These are the same corporations that happily tell us that they intend to pump more oil, even though it is destroying the climate for everybody.
All the terms that both Republicans and Democrats use are designed to lump in the common people of the US with the corporate ruling class. As if our interests are one in the same: our Hemisphere, America’s National Interests, and Our National Security.
We are now in the world that the US-supported Palestinian genocide has ushered in. Now we are living out the consequences.
Two days later, Trump doubled down, indicating that Colombia, Cuba, Mexico, and Greenland are next! He also bragged about “OUR” great military. Funny thing, though, “OUR” military gets more than a trillion dollars a year, but both Republicans and Democrats claim that there is just not enough money for health care, child care or food support for people. This is why 70% of Americans do not have enough savings to cover an emergency.
The reality is that the entire hemisphere and the entire world belong to the people. Venezuela belongs to the people of Venezuela, just as the US belongs to the people of this country.
But nothing will change until we break the political control of the ruling class over our lives. The same billionaires who tell us they have the right to destroy the climate “because they own the oil”, are also the same parasites that are destroying our country. Fascism at home always means war abroad.
The fight against fascism is a fight for basic human needs for all, for democracy, for the control of government, and for the future of humanity and the planet. By taking the offensive to defeat fascism, the working class can pass over to the offensive against capitalism and private property, the seedbed of fascism.2
